Mandy Lee’s Recipes for Good New Orleans Dishes, c. 1950s, WDSU-TV, New Orleans: Extremely rare cookbook-let from WDSU-TV channel 6 in New Orleans circa 1950s. Signed Amanda Lee on the back of the front cover. Mandy Lee, real name Ruth Prevost, is considered to be the first African American woman to host her own television cooking show. In the introduction to the cookbook, Harnett T. Kane calls her “one of New Orleans most resourceful artists of skillet and baking oven, a mistress of high cuisine.
This booklet has a card stock cover and 68 pages, with one or two recipes per page. It’s a long, narrow booklet with a plastic comb binding at the top. The back of the cover, originally intended to work as an easel, is torn in half. The cover is stained and bent, as are several of the pages. But the recipes are all here! They include Beef Bar-B-Q, Curried Lamb Pie, Fancy Spareribs, Baked Stuff Veal Roll, Daube Glace, Mandy Creole Grillade, Mushroom Chicken Dinner, Mandy’s Oyster Loaf, Crab Chops, Crawfish Creole, Oyster Bisque, Turnip Greens and Pot Likker, Lemon Cream Charlotte, Bananas in Rum, French Peach Oatmeal Torte, Mandy’s Wonder Cake with Praline Topping, Divinity Nut Rolls, and many more, including several special Christmas recipes.
